Goldsmiths is a College of the University of London and has around 8,000 part and full-time students studying subjects focussing on arts-based cognitive and social sciences like media, politics, computing, history, anthropology, sociology, psychology and education. Goldsmiths is located in New-Cross, south-east London, and is 15 minutes away from Whitechapel and Central London.
The Islamic Society are relatively small though, well-established society within the College. The ISoc aims to serve the interests of the Muslim community studying at Goldsmiths and engage with the general population at large. We aim to ensure the provision of adequate prayer and wudu' facilities, halal food on campus and a supportive atmosphere for those wanting to learn about and practice Islaam.
We are strictly non-partisan and strive to adhere to the authentic methodology and practices of the early generations of Muslims. We are honoured to have Imam Shakeel Begg of Lewisham and Kent Mosque serving as our Assistant Chaplain.
The ISoc is the focal point for information about Islaam and also for reference for wide range of research involving Media, Psychology, Sociology to name a few. The ISoc has also provided lectures for PGCE Primary students in their Religious Education day. Goldsmiths ISoc also has had guest interviews on the radio and have articles published in local and national newspapers.
We currently hold regular Qur'aan classes, teaching Tajweed and going through Tafseer. Also there are regular halaqaat and study circles which follow a curriculum formulated in conjunction with London Isoc. We also organise seminars and lectures to deal with contemporary and fundamental issues related to Muslims who are studying at the College. There are also arrangements to attend lectures and seminars off-campus in and around London. We also have an outreach programme, to complete the obligation of da'wah, which provides free literature, CDs, and Qur'aan and also arranges for seminars and exhibitions about Islaam.
The ISoc has a wide range of regular social activities ranging from the weekly 'Munch in the Prayer Room' to Brothers Paintballing and Football sessions.
Goldsmiths sisters have regular social activities within the campus, meeting in the prayer room and around the College. Also there are annual sisters’ picnic, sisters’ treasure hunt, mud-sliding in the summer and ice-skating in the winter. The sisters are also particularly active in raising funds for charitable causes and the Islamic Society, with themed days and an ‘ISoc Relief’ programme.
